Nurse Corp Poster - WWII

Due to the advanced age and the complex medical conditions of the veterans on these flights, all guardians will be assigned to the veterans by Honor Flight Northwest Ohio.  Veterans with complex medical conditions will automatically be assigned to a medical team member to serve as their guardian. Veterans that do not demonstrate specific medical needs, or live alone independently, will be assigned a non-medical guardian for the entire trip.

  • Family members may be considered as guardians if the following criteria are present:
  • The veteran is in Hospice care, resides in an assisted living setting, or resides in a nursing home.
  • The veteran is terminally ill
  • The veteran lives more than 30 miles from Toledo Express Airport

All Honor Flight Guardians must be in good health, be able to lift 50 lbs, be able to transfer veterans in and out of wheelchairs, push/pull and lift a wheelchair throughout the day.  They must also be able to bend over to tie shoes or pick up items for veterans.  Honor Flight Northwest Ohio will attempt to match veterans with guardians with comparable height/weights to ensure optimal safety.

A three-hour training session is mandatory prior to the flight.  Our guardians must be responsible, respectful, kind, considerate, enthusiastic and patient!  Applying, as a guardian does not guarantee you will have the opportunity to fly with us as is noted on our guardian applications. The minimum age for a guardian is 18 years old. The maximum age for a guardian is 65 years old (inclusive). In other words, once a person reaches his/her 66th birthday, he/she is no longer eligible to be a guardian. Sorry, no exceptions to this policy. Honor flight Northwest Ohio reserves the right to refuse any guardian application for any reason.

Guardians pay their own way for this opportunity and receive the same accommodations as the Veteran.  The $400.00 fee is a small price to pay to share in the joy and comradery that our veterans so deserve on their journey. During the trip you will make a new friend or two, brighten the smile, and re-invigorate a hero. Many have said that the memorials are a fountain of youth for our veterans.

IMPORTANT: Guardian Fees are payable by cash, check or money order the day of training. DO NOT send guardian fees in with your application unless specifically told to do so.
